While searching for a topic this week, I ran into an article about African Americans having a hard time getting jobs. They were going to delete the African-American associations they were involved with and eliminate the middle name of Jabbar to J. in order to prevent stereotypes. I was going to use that as my topic of debate until I ran into this one!
The school is called Med Grow Cannabis College. For those of you that do not know, much like I did until 15 minutes ago, Cannabis is part of the scientific name for marijuana. Cannabis sativa. The school is a 6 week course for $485 is like an "agricultural extension class covering the growing cycle, nutrients and light requirements." The article states that the school teaches the students how to grow and cure marijuana. Ensuring quality and potency is also a priority.
Medical Marijuana is supposed to be used for medical purposes only. The person with the perscription and their caregiver are allowed to have up to 12 plants. Each patient can have up to 5 caregivers. The idea behind the school is to prepare for the market demand of marijuana for people that get prescribed and do not want to wait the months for marijuana to grow.
This sounds like a scary situation! Marijuana is usually classified as a "gateway" drug that people usually blame for introducing them into the harder drugs. The law seems to be easy to get around and sounds like a good excuse for someone who is caught with the stuff.
Marijuana is going to prove dangerous than some would like to believe. Look at the impact that cigarettes have had on people. Story has it that people would smoke before athletic events in order to open up the the lungs. By leaving the door open a crack, no pun intended, we are opening up ourselves for trouble.
In summary, don't put this college on your resume and don't mess with a "gateway" drug.
What do you think?

Philip,
ReplyDeleteI don't know a lot about it. One thing that seems odd to me is that marijuana is the only solution for these people who are suffering. Is it really the best medicine to them? I haven't investigated that enough, but that's the argument I'd guess. Cheech and Chong are in support of this kind of business. If you're in business with drug dealers, you're probably in the wrong business morally. It's why nobody wants their picture taken or admit what sort of class they take when they're attending Med Grow Cannabis College. That alone should speak volumes about how legitimate this sort of program really is. It's gives me no sense of ease if the government in Michigan or California have passed laws saying it's ok to smoke marijuana. We all know just how corrupt government can be, even our great American government. There just isn't enough opposition to it at this point. Without opposition, or knowledge of the happenings, things like this college will sprout all over America. In my opinion, like a herbacide, we need to squash politicians and government policies that allow legalization of this sort of thing. Unless, there just is no other option for patients, which I "highly" doubt.
Have a good week.

I think that this a funny that you wrote about this. My dad and I were just talking about how Colorado is one of a few states that legalized Marijuana for medically uses (http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/viewresource.asp?resourceID=000881).
ReplyDeleteThankfully, I have never had cancer and do not know what those who have are going through, but I would like to say that I have an open mind. We had a good friend pass away this fall from a a 4 year battle with cancer. She went all over the world for treatments (both pain and for cancer) and nothing worked. Her tumors never shrank or was ever in remission. I never asked what she did for her pain, but if she did use marijuana to help ease her pain, I would not think less of her. Do I think that states should allow people to grow their own? No, I think that it should be distributed, like all medication, from a doctor. That is how it could be regulated.
People are worried about illegal drugs being harmful for those who are addicted to it, they should also be worried about the legal drugs that are addicting and how harmful they are on people.
